The Benefits of Project Management in the Education Industry

This presentation will explore the benefits of a formal project management methodology at a community college and university. We will explore current processes, the problems encountered and the benefits of applying formal project management. Discuss how seasoned project management professionals can benefit not only from the outcomes of a project, but provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.

Presenter Bios:

Jeremy Lovato is an Administrator and Chief Information Officer at Santa Fe Community College. As a business Major and a Community College graduate himself, Mr. Lovato takes pride in his leadership role of educating and strengthening the community through effective delivery of IT strategy.  Prior to Higher Education, Mr. Lovato operated as a financial analyst for a 54-billion-dollar valued mortgage firm, IT consulting VP, real estate professional, and professional DJ. Entrepreneurially spirited, Mr. Lovato has ventured in real estate development projects, electronic discovery projects for multi-billion-dollar cases, and software development.  As a proud father 8 and 12 year old daughters, Mr. Lovato is passionate about addressing gender gaps in society and spends much of his free time coaching youth girl sports, and volunteering for girl STEM and coding events.

Duane Arruti serves as the Chief Information Officer for the University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico’s flagship higher education institution. Duane obtained his BBA from James Madison University in 1995 and his MBA from UNM in 2008. He joined the University of New Mexico as a staff member in 1996 where he has worked both on the Main Campus and at the Health Sciences Center. Duane has taken a leadership role in a number of cross-campus technology and business initiatives, not the least of which was UNM’s Banner enterprise resource planning system implementation from 2002 to 2008. In his broad 20+ years at the University, Duane has also served as Associate Controller for Financial Services, Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Director of Enterprise Applications for Information Technologies.  Duane is a licensed Certified Public Accountant and serves as a professional faculty member at the UNM Anderson School of Management, teaching information systems foundations to upper-level, undergraduate business students. Duane currently serves as President of the New Mexico Council for Higher Education Computing/Communication Services (CHECS), and is an active board member for the New Mexico Technology Council (NMTC).
