Are there ways to reduce costs for programs and certifications?

There are resources for low-cost and even free certifications. Below are a number of resources we’ve found that may help including the GI Bill and COOL.  Military-friendly funding programs can help cover the cost of training and certification, including: 

 

Funding Resources for Active Duty Military

Most military-affiliated individuals pay nothing out of pocket for certification thanks to:

Once your certification application is approved, you’ll simply pay your exam fee (using COOL/VA if applicable) and schedule your exam online or at an in-person testing center. 

 

Funding Resources for Military Veterans

Many veterans pay nothing out of pocket for certification and training thanks to programs like:

    • Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31)
    • Onward to Opportunity (O2O) training program
    • ACT NOW Education
    • Mission43  

And, you likely qualify for education through the GI Bill with programs like:

    • Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 31, 33, and 35) 
    • Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA – Chapter 35) 

 

Funding Resources for Military Spouses

Many military spouses pay nothing out of pocket for certification.

While not an exhaustive list, here are some funding options that might help.

Federally-Funded, No-Cost Programs:

  • My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA)
    • MyCAA supports spouses of currently serving service members on Title 10 orders and in the E1-E9, W1-W3, and O1-O3 rank bands
    • Request an ETP 
  • WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) 
    • The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) provides free training and certification funding for jobseekers. Military spouses may qualify as dislocated workers. Please contact your local Workforce Development Office to learn more.
  • GI Bill (Chapter 33 and 35)
    • Note, the Chapter 33 and 35 programs are reimbursement programs

Non-Profit, Community Based Options:

  • Onward to Opportunity (O2O)
  • ACT NOW Education
  • Mission43
  • National Military Family Association Military Spouse Scholarship
    • Also a reimbursement program
